Marker words

We hear the phrase marker word used all the time between dog trainers but how can the average pet parent use this to their advantage? First let’s understand what a marker word is. It is an action or phrase that proceeds a reinforcement. Many people like to use the term “yes” or a small tool like a clicker to help them. By teaching your dog a marker word we are making communication between our four-legged partner clearer.

Now let’s talk about how to load your marker words. First grab some treats, something your dog really enjoys (I find chicken or freeze-dried treats very motivating). You can have your dog on leash while you do this or not. To your dog say the word “yes” and immediately give them a treat. Repeat this a few times. After a few repetitions you’ll begin to notice that your dog begins to perk up or get excited when you say the word “yes”. Your dog has now made the connections that “yes” means a delicious snack.

Once your dog gets that “yes” means something good now we can start to use it in our training. I like to teach the command touch when we teach our yes. It’s a simple behavior that is quick to teach and a great behavior for your toolbox.

Our first step is to hold your hand out in front of your dog (resist the urge to bring you hand to their nose). When your dog goes to investigate you mark the behavior with a “yes” and feed a treat. Repeat and make sure to move your hand around to different places, keep it easy though. Every time your dog’s nose touches your hound give them a peppy “yes” and feed. Pretty soon your dog will be leaping to you when you present your hand. With this you’ve taught your dog the meaning of “yes” and how to understand it. Now the possibilities are endless.

Once you’ve mastered the use of “yes” you can begin to get more creative with marker words. I use a marker word “get it” that free my dog from a stay to get his toy or treats on the floor. Different marker words can mean different things. We can use it in so many ways to become a better team with your furry friend. Thats the ultimate goal!
